Why does the Bosch Indego get stuck?

The Bosch Indego is an excellent robotic lawn mower, but it has one notorious weakness: the original wheels lose grip on wet grass, slopes over 10°, and uneven terrain. The result is a robot that spins in place, gets stuck in dips, or stops with an error message halfway through the job.

If you have a Bosch Indego XS 300, S/S+ 350, S/S+ 400, S/S+ 500, M/M+ 700, or a similar model, this is most likely the problem you're running into. The smooth factory wheels are designed for perfectly flat, dry lawns — something few gardens can offer all year round.

The 3 most common situations

1. The robot gets stuck in morning dew

The classic scenario: you've scheduled the mower to start at 6:00 AM, only to find it stuck halfway across the garden at 9:00 AM because the grass was still wet. The original wheels have a smooth surface, and wet grass provides no friction.

2. Slopes that are too steep

Bosch markets the Indego for slopes of up to 27°, but that's only under perfect conditions. In practice, problems start at 10–15° if the grass is damp or there are minor bumps in the terrain.

3. Wheels digging into soft ground

After heavy rain, the ground turns soft — especially around garden borders or where the lawn meets flower beds. The narrow original wheels sink in and create small holes where the robot then gets stuck the next time around.

Solution 1: Only mow when the grass is dry (free, but limiting)

The obvious fix: schedule the mower to run in the afternoon once the dew has cleared. If you use the Bosch SmartMowing app, it can even automatically delay mowing based on the weather forecast.

Downside: This reduces effective mowing time by 30–50% and doesn't solve the problem on slopes or soft ground.

Solution 2: Improved rubber bands around the wheels (partial fix)

There are elastic rubber bands that can be pulled over the existing wheels. They improve grip a little, but they tend to shift and fall off after a couple of months. Many users on the Bosch Indego fan forum report mixed results.

Downside: A temporary fix. They fall off, need replacing, and don't help enough on steep slopes.

Solution 3: Off-road wheels with spikes (permanent fix)

How to fit the new wheels (5 min. per wheel)

  1. Flip the Indego upside down and locate the rear wheel cap
  2. Pry off the cap with a flat-head screwdriver
  3. Remove the original wheel with a cross-head screwdriver
  4. Place the new off-road wheel onto the hub
  5. Reattach the screw and cap

No modifications, no extra parts. Total installation time for both wheels: approx. 10 minutes.

Will the wheels damage the lawn?

That's the first question a lot of people ask. The tread depth is approx. 4 mm — enough to grip wet grass and soft ground, but not so deep that it tears up the lawn. Users with typical suburban gardens report no damage at all. In fact, the wheels reduce wear on the grass because the robot no longer spins in place.

Will they work on slopes steeper than 27°?

Yes. The spike tread pattern significantly improves climbing ability beyond Bosch's official 27°. Combined with wet conditions, these wheels can keep the Indego moving on slopes where the original wheels would give up.
