Where do all the slugs come from?
If you have a garden, you know the problem: Spanish slugs (also known as "killer slugs") have spread widely since the 1990s, devouring everything from lettuce to strawberries and hostas in a single night. A single adult slug lays up to 400 eggs per year. If you see one, there are hundreds more you haven't spotted yet.
Most people start with ordinary slug pellets — but that comes with serious risks. Here's what you need to know about Ferramol, and how you can actually get rid of slugs without harming pets, birds, or hedgehogs.
The problem with ordinary slug pellets
Traditional slug pellets contain metaldehyde or methiocarb — both extremely toxic to animals other than slugs.
Specific problems:
- Dogs and cats eat the blue pellets because they taste sweet. Even small amounts cause seizures, liver damage, and death.
- Hedgehogs eat the poisoned slugs and die in large numbers every year.
- Birds that eat slugs are also poisoned.
- Children mistake the pellets for sweets — there are annual hospital admissions as a result.
Methiocarb has been banned in the EU since 2014. Metaldehyde is still legal, but is advised against by environmental authorities.
The better solution: Ferramol (iron phosphate)
Ferramol is a slug control product based on iron(III) phosphate — a substance that occurs naturally in soil. It works only against slugs and is harmless to all other animals.
How Ferramol works:
- The slug eats the pellet
- Iron phosphate destroys the slug's digestive system
- The slug stops feeding within a few hours
- The slug retreats into the soil and dies there within 3–7 days
Important: You won't find dead slugs in your garden — they die underground, which can make it hard to see that the product is working. But the plant damage stops within a few days.

Ferramol may be 30–50% more expensive than traditional pellets, but when you factor in the risk to pets and hedgehogs, it's the only sensible choice for garden use.
Where should you scatter Ferramol?
Most people make the mistake of spreading slug pellets all over the garden. That's ineffective and a waste of money. Slugs only move 5–10 metres from their hiding spot. Scatter it in a targeted way where they actually hide:
- Under hedges and shrubs — especially thujas and laurels
- Behind stone edging and bed borders
- In compost heaps or piles of grass clippings
- Under low-growing plants that lie close to the ground
- Behind patio posts or pots
Apply only a thin layer — 5–10 pellets per square metre is enough. More is not better.
Better than pellets: a slug trap
Pellets only kill the slugs that are already in your garden. A slug trap stops them from reaching your plants in the first place.
The classic beer trap works, but it's impractical: you need to refill it with beer several times a week, and a small sunken bowl quickly fills up with soil and leaves.

For a single enclosed bed or greenhouse, DIY can be fine. For an entire garden, we recommend 3–5 dedicated stations placed strategically.
Natural methods that actually work
If you don't want to use any kind of chemical control, there are some methods with a proven track record:
- Hedgehogs — natural slug predators. Leave a corner of your garden undisturbed with a compost heap and branches where they can shelter.
- Hand-picking — go into the garden 1 hour after sunset with a torch, collect the slugs, and drop them into salt water. Most effective in wet weather.
- Copper barriers — copper strips around beds emit a mild electrical charge that deters slugs. They last 3–5 years.
- Water in the early morning instead of the evening — slugs love moist soil at night. Dry soil in the evening reduces their activity.
These methods combined with a slug bait station give you control without any chemicals at all.
The 3-step plan for a slug-free garden
- Reduce hiding spots: clear away piles of branches, remove pots sitting directly on the ground, trim low branches up off the soil.
- Place 3–5 slug bait stations in strategic spots — 5–10 metres from your brassicas, lettuce, and strawberries.
- Use Ferramol in the stations weekly from April to October. Refill after rain.
Follow this plan and you'll see a significant reduction in the slug population after 2–3 weeks, and almost no plant damage after 2 months.
